Studio Extended Family Photoshoot Perth

Some weekends only come around once, and for this family, this was one of them. Twenty people across four generations. All in Perth at the same time for what turned out to be the most beautiful extended family photoshoot in Perth to celebrate two massive milestones on the same weekend! Nikola’s 80th birthday and his and Pamela’s 60th wedding anniversary.

Family had flown in from Sydney specifically for the occasion (for just a 24 hour whirlwind trip!), and Pamela had been quietly wishing for a family photoshoot for years. This was finally the weekend it was going to happen. And then Perth had other ideas…

WHEN THE WEATHER WINS, YOU HIRE A STUDIO

The session was originally planned outdoors, but the forecast was absolutely horrendous. With family flying in for just 24 hours and rescheduling completely off the table, there was only one option… hire a studio last minute and make it work regardless!

That’s exactly what I did. Because there was absolutely no way I was going to let this family down.

It took eleven minutes to get twenty people into position. Thirty seconds to capture it. And worth every single second of it.

FOUR GENERATIONS IN ONE FRAME

An extended family photoshoot in Perth doesn’t get much bigger than this (although I did have an enquiry the other day for 50!)

But I digress… Four generations, every combination you can think of, all documented in a two-hour studio session. The full group, the grandparents alone, the individual family units, the great-grandparents with the little ones, couples, each family with Pamela & Nikola… just to name a few. The kind of variety that means every branch of the family walks away with something that’s theirs.

Once I had the ‘must have’ classic portrait, with Nikola and Pamela anchored in the middle and everyone else layered around them, I wanted to give them more than just one polished group photo to choose from. So I left the grandparents exactly where they were and gave everyone else ten seconds to scatter and find a new spot. Without overthinking it.

What we got was so much fun to create 🤩

THE INDIVIDUAL FAMILY UNITS

The thing about a large extended family photoshoot is that the group shot is just the beginning. Some of the most meaningful photos from a session like this are the smaller ones. Each family unit on their own, couples together, the kids with their grandparents and so many more other combinations. These are the photos that end up in bedrooms and on bedside tables, not just the entry wall.

FROM THE STUDIO TO THE WALL

About a week after the session, Pamela came into my Bedford studio to see her family’s photos for the first time on the big screen. She ordered a beautiful collection of framed artwork.

A large framed portrait of the whole family for the entry of their home, surrounded by four smaller framed portraits of each individual family unit. Every person who walks through that front door is going to see this family, together, frozen at exactly this moment in time.

This is what it looks like once it’s chosen, framed, and finally home where it belongs.

THINKING ABOUT AN EXTENDED FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT IN PERTH?

Most of my multigenerational sessions happen outdoors, where there’s space to breathe and room for everyone to spread out. This session was the exception. A last-minute studio hire when the weather gave us no choice, and it proved that a stunning extended family photoshoot in Perth is possible rain, hail or shine.

If you’ve got a milestone coming up, or your family hasn’t been photographed together in years, this is your sign to stop putting it off. These moments don’t come around twice.
