YOUR NEWBORN EXPERIENCE PREPARATION GUIDE
Your newborn shoot is a long term investment of your memories and milestones, so you’ll want to make sure you come along as well prepared as possible, to make sure you have THE most amazing experience and photos.
Have a good read through, and as always, if you have any questions at all, just ask. I’m here to help!
Consider whether either of you are due for a hair cut/colour. We tend to be our own worst critics, so anything you can do for yourselves to feel and look great, will shine through in the photos. This includes things like getting your nails or eyebrows done, going to the barber for facial grooming etc. Please note, your hands will definitely be photographed in a close up manner, so even if you don’t plan to get a manicure, please make sure your nails are tidy (this goes for both parents).
Feel free to bring along any special items such as a hand knitted blanket grandma made as an example.
I have a small range of neutral blankets and wraps, as well as some nappy covers, but you’re most welcome to bring some along too. As with your outfits, keep anything for baby neutral, light and pattern free.
Please give bub a feed just before leaving home so they have a full tummy to help them sleep. During the session, I have a comfy couch for you to feed on. Please also bring bub into the studio in the car seat capsule.
Dress baby in a onesie that’s easy to remove (front closing ones are best for this) to minimise disturbing the baby. Also please don’t put a singlet on them as they’ll likely wake when we take it off.
Bring a change of clothes for both of you in case baby has an accident on you. They’ll be wearing their nappy most of the time, but just in case.
Bear in mind the room will be quite warm to keep your baby comfortable, so please consider this when choosing your outfits.
Bring a dummy even if you don’t plan to use one. It’ll help settle your baby into a position without creating long term habits.
And just so you’re aware, there’s a flight of stairs to get to my studio.
I’ll have some refreshments during the shoot, so if anyone has dietary requirements, please let me know.
Including older siblings in your newborn session? Keep them excited and engaged by making them part of the planning. Let them know what to expect and what they’ll be doing during the session. Show them photos of the studio and other children with their newborn siblings to help them feel prepared and involved.
We’ll start the shoot with family and sibling photos first while they’re engaged and curious, so make sure you don’t pull out the big guns (aka devices, toys or food) until AFTER we got the shots we need! There’s a lot of waiting around involved for siblings, so make sure you come well prepared.
Thanks for reading!
